Nicole Foundation participated in Road Safety Week 2023 on 18th May 2023. The event was attended by other road safety partners which included the Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda Police, Red Cross, Kitante Primary School, Hope for Victims of Traffic Accidents (HOVITA), and Uganda Road Accident Reduction Network Organisation (URRENO) among others. Messages promoting road safety were shared during the event. Ms. Maria Nansasi Nkalubo, the trauma and injury focal point person at the Ministry of Health indicated that Government spends a minimum of 3.6 million shillings on each person who sustains serious road injury hence the need to make every effort to guarantee safety for all road users. Mr. Freddie Kiapi, the Hovita Project Manager and Mr. Fred Tumwine, the ROSACU Chairman both appealed for putting in place of policies that compel drivers to drive safely at all times and more specifically to observe 30km/hr speed near schools. The Road Safety Week coincided with the UN Global Road Safety Week that ran from May 15-21, 2023 where policy makers we urged to #RethinkMobility in order to make walking, cycling, and public transport safe and convenient so that people can make shift to active, sustainable mobility. Road traffic accidents are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide with around 1.3 million people killed and more than 50 million people injured each year.
